Well Water Treatment FAQ

Short answers.

Do I need a water softener?

Only if hardness on your water test is high enough to cause scale on fixtures and appliances, or it bothers you. Softeners cost $1,200 to $3,800 installed (HomeGuide); Angi says installation averages $1,500.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Yes for most people, though it adds a small amount of sodium. People on low-sodium diets can use potassium chloride or a drinking-water RO tap.

Will one system fix everything?

Rarely. Most wells with multiple problems need two or three components in the right order.

Can I install it myself?

Simple filters and RO units are DIY-friendly. Softeners and iron filters need plumbing and drain connections and usually local code compliance.
